Discover Meals From The Heart Cafe

Walking into Meals From The Heart Cafe feels like stepping into a small, welcoming corner of New Orleans where comfort food and thoughtful eating meet. Located at 1100 N Peters St #13, New Orleans, LA 70116, United States, the cafe sits right in the French Market area, which makes it an easy stop whether you’re sightseeing or grabbing a relaxed lunch between errands. I first ate here after a long walk through the Quarter, and the calm vibe and friendly counter service were exactly what I needed.

The menu leans heavily toward plant-based and vegetarian dishes, but it never feels limiting or preachy. Instead, it focuses on flavor, balance, and familiar comfort. I ordered their well-known Vegan Mac & Cheese, and it honestly surprised me. The sauce was creamy without being heavy, and the seasoning was spot-on. The staff explained that they rely on cashews and nutritional yeast rather than processed substitutes, a method commonly used in whole-food plant-based cooking. That attention to technique shows up in the taste. Friends of mine have gone for the BBQ Cauliflower Wrap, which consistently gets strong reviews for its smoky flavor and satisfying texture.

What stands out is how the kitchen handles preparation. Most items are made fresh daily, and sauces are blended in-house. From a practical standpoint, that matters. According to research shared by the American Heart Association, meals lower in saturated fat and rich in plant ingredients can support heart health and overall wellness. You don’t need to be vegan to appreciate that; you just need to enjoy food that leaves you feeling good after eating it.

Over multiple visits, I noticed the cafe attracts a wide mix of locals and travelers. Some are committed to plant-based eating, while others are just curious. One afternoon, I spoke with a couple visiting from Texas who said they found the cafe through online reviews while searching for lighter lunch options near the French Market. They mentioned that the clear menu descriptions made it easy to choose dishes that fit their preferences, which says a lot about how thoughtfully the menu is laid out.

Drinks deserve a mention too. The fresh juices and smoothies are popular for a reason. I usually go for the Green Detox Juice, which blends kale, apple, lemon, and ginger. It’s refreshing without tasting grassy, and it pairs well with heavier menu items. Nutrition experts often highlight the benefits of leafy greens and ginger for digestion, and while this isn’t a medical treatment, it’s a practical way to add more whole ingredients into a regular meal.

In terms of credibility, the cafe’s approach aligns closely with guidance from organizations like the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which recognizes well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets as appropriate for all stages of life. That doesn’t mean every dish is low-calorie or meant for dieting, but it does show that the food philosophy is grounded in respected nutritional principles rather than trends.

Location-wise, Meals From The Heart Cafe benefits from steady foot traffic, yet it never feels rushed. Orders come out efficiently, and the staff is open to explaining ingredients or making small adjustments when possible. One limitation worth noting is seating during peak hours; the space can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Still, most people seem happy to wait or grab their food to go.

Across reviews, menu consistency and friendly service come up again and again, and my experiences match that reputation. Whether you’re exploring healthier comfort food, looking for reliable vegetarian options, or just want a relaxed spot near the French Market, this cafe manages to feel both intentional and easygoing at the same time.

  • I was so excited to find New Orleans food that was vegan! I ordered the vegan Po Boy & it was amazing. My husband ordered the regular one & also loved his. We actually had to go up & ask which one was vegan since they both looked so similar. We got vegan beignets that were life changing. I wish we lived closer so I could eat here all the time!

  • Some of the best vegan food I've ever had. I got the sweet potatoes, sweet heat cauliflower, red beans and rice, and bread pudding for dessert. It was all fantastic, but the red beans and rice were the star of the show. I was in vegan heaven! The staff were also very friendly, and the food was reasonably priced.

  • My experience at Meals From the Heart Cafe was surprisingly excellent! My Shrimp Poboy that I ordered was well-seasoned. I thought it would be fried, but the shrimp was grilled. Then, they gave me a side of seasoned potatoes that didn't disappoint! I hadn't heard of this restaurant on social media, but give it a try if you're in New Orleans in the French Quarter.

  • This is a market style place, but they have an amazing vegan menu and I only wish I was hungrier. Being in New Orleans I thought I better have the Okra Gumbo which was delicious. Not the sort of thing I’d normally order and I fought the urge to go one of the amazing looking Po-boys, but glad I did! It was delicious, and light, and the small was perfect as a snack, especially accompanied by the amazing Bloody Mary, which was LOADED with edible garnishes. Loved it and the atmosphere of the market was perfect for a quick pit stop in New Orleans.

  • People, just do yourself a favour and go to this place! Delicious food, delicious drinks, super friendly service! We were there twice - it was that good! Also that was definitely the best Bloody Mary I've ever had! The crab cakes were absolutely delicious!

  • A French Market staple I eat every every time I visit. Everything is good but if you’re looking for vegan beignets they got ‘em. The vegan crab sliders are to die for.

  • Soul Food Read Time 1-3mins Let me preface this by saying I have been here multiple times. Let’s start from the beginning. On a tourist journey, I stumbled upon this cafe and fell in love. It was engagement at first sight of the menu. I was first lured in by the name and was sold on the list of offerings shared on the menu. The menu was complex, yet simple in my opinion. What made it complex? The different options of crafted cuisine varying from non-vegan to vegan. This cafe blends New Orleans traditional staples with vegan variations. How intriguing right? I opted for the vegan crab cake with the Remoulade sauce and it has now become my go-to. Just to name a few, there are other things like beignets and po-boys that are delicious. This cafe truly cooks from the heart and soul. Please give them a visit and you’ll be able to check out the French Market as well. Talk about a two for one special lol or feeding two birds with one scone. ( That’s my PETA approved idiom )
